1901 Sam Cowan was born in Chesterfield, England. The defender joined MCFC from Doncaster Rovers in 1924 and was an inspirational leader on the pitch and the only player to have appeared in three separate FA cup finals for the blues. During his 11 years at Maine Road he played 407 games and scored 24 goals. He later became manager of MCFC.
