City 7-up in one half – but not a record

As the game against Sheffield Wednesday unfolded I was waiting for the flood-gates to open, and City would walk over the away team. But knowing the old Manchester City, I knew all too well that the exact opposite could happen. Lucikly this team is nowhere like the City of old and the second half resulted in a 7-goal thumping that left the 6000 away supporters angered with the way the Manager had composed the team.

7-0 in 45. minutes is extreme at this level, but not a record in the League Cup for number of goals scored in one half. Interestingly: One City player has even once before been involved in a 7-goals-in-one-half League Cup game, while he was playing for a different club.

On Sep 20th 2005 Wycombe Wanderers hosted Aston Villa in the 2nd round of the League Cup in what was to become a game of two different half’s and a record for number of goals scored in one League Cup game. Wycombe took the lead after only 6 minutes through Nathan Tyson, and when Villa equalised after 14 minutes through Steven Davis (now Southampoton) everybody thought this was going to be a walk in the park for the visitors from Premier League. However Wycombe counterd with two more goals by Roger Johnson (played for West-Ham last season, and are now with Wolves) and Tommy Mooney, and went into the break with a comfortable 3-1 lead.

What was being said or drunk during that break nobody knows, but only one team entered to play football. Villa totally overran the home team in the second half and put 7 goals into the net, including two by current City player James Milner (and two by former City player Gareth Barry). Other players involved that day was Gary Cahill (now Chelsea) and Liam Ridgwell (went from WBA to the US league this summer).

Although the game ended in a record number of goals it was played in a well behaved fashion. Only two yellow cards were given, and nobody had to leave the pitch early, as opposed to the City-game, where Sheffield Wednesday was reduced to ten men at 3-0.
