Nicholas, and brother Anthony, were both products of the youth development programme at Maine Road. Like the Brightwell brothers the Fentons are both defenders, but during the shakeout at Maine Road following the dive into the 2nd division, it was only Nick who got a contract with the blues. Nick turned out to be a cool, pacy defender who was also strong in the air. He was often compared with Keith Curle by his style and to everyones delight he was selected to represent England in the 1998 U-18 World Youth Championship at Cyprus. After a promising 1998/99 season where he made 15 appearances for the blues he spent three months of the next season on loan to Notts County to gain more experience.

After the rise to the Premiership Nick found his opportuneties to play for the first team was sparse, and after two sucessfull loan-spells with Notts County he signed for the Nottingham club in November 2000.
