As schoolboy Michael was spotted by Joe Royle when he was manager of Oldham. But it wasn't until Royle became boss at Goodison Park he managed to get the signature of the promising forward. Michael made his debut against Manchester United at the age of 17. He also established himself as an England U21 international, and his future looked bright when injury put him out of the game for more than a year.
Even though Everton is his boyhood team, Michael did not think twice when Royle wanted him to come to Manchester. Playing in front of the big crowds at Maine Road was more tempting than reserve team football in Liverpool, and he hopes his loan period will be enough to secure a permanent move.
