Willie joined City as a junior, and replaced Glyn Pardoe at left back. He soon made this position his own, and his excellent play brought him 35 full international caps for Scotland, including the 1978 World Cup finals.

He had previously worked with Joe Royle at Oldham and Everton before taking the post of First Team Coach at Sheffield United. However, the lure of the light blues proved too much to resist, and he rejoined Royle at Maine Road towards the end of the 1997-98 season.
