Birmingham born Darren was seen as Des Walker's natural replacement at Nottingham Forest when the England international defender opted for a move to Italian side Sampdoria at the end of the 1991-92 season... Darren, however, had other ideas. He decided that he too would prefer a move away from the City Ground and, with his Forest contract up, he signed for the Rams in a £550,000 deal.

He did a good job of cleaning up after Craig Short's mistakes for a couple of seasons. Just signed a new two year contract.

In September 1996 he signed on a loan spell with Manchester City, where he was meant to cover for the selling of Keith Curle to Wolverhampton. He soon beacame a regular in the central defence, and played in both trashings by Lincoln (!). His future looks dubious now that Coppell has taken the manager spot at Maine Road.
