German international midfielder Michael Tarnat joined Manchester City from Bayern Munich in June 2003. The 33-year-old, whose contract with Bayern was up after this season, signed a one-year deal with the English premier league side. Tarnat, who won 19 caps for Germany, had been at Bayern since 1997. He will play at Manchester City alongside former England goalkeeper David Seaman, who joined from Arsenal the same week..

Michael started his career at MSV Duisberg in 1990 and made 134 appearance for them before signing for Karlsruhe in 1994. After three seasons there, he was snapped up by the giants of German football, Bayern Munich. The defender was with Bayern Munich for six years and played in the Champions League final seeing the trophy slip from his grasp when Manchester United won four years ago. However, apart from his first season where he made 32 appearances, he was never really a regular at the Olympic Stadium. He played only 15 times in his last two seasons before leaving at the end of his contract.

When asked who his preferred destination would be, he joked: "It has to be Real Madrid or a team like that." However, he also admitted that he may have to hang up his boots at the age of 33. Then Manchester City came in and signed him in June 2003. "I am looking forward to playing at Manchester City under Kevin Keegan," said Tarnat. "They have a great support and I am especially excited about playing at City's new home." Blues chairman John Wardle told the club's website: "We are delighted to have signed Michael. He has an excellent record, with Champions League experience and will do well for the club. Kevin was keen to sign this player as he has some excellent qualities and experience in European football."

June 16th 2004: Michael Tarnat has shaken off the disappointment of being released by Manchester City by signing for Hannover 96. The former German international was shocked at not having his City contract renewed, especially so given that he was the only recognised first team left back on the books and scored four times in his 41 starts for the club.
