Younger brother of Ian Brightwell. Never gained a regular place in the City line-up, despite numerous attempts at left and centre back. Failed to convince Ball of his abilities, and it was soon clear that the young Brightwell had to go, despite being bred by the Blues. After three loan spells he was finally transferred to neighbours Bradford City for £30,000 in December 1995.
