Ged Brannan costed City £750,000 when he was bought from Tranmere Rovers in March 1997. Brannan was originally going to take advantage of the Bosman ruling and move to France in the close season for a free, plus £300,000 signing-on fee, but decided on the move to Maine Road after Tranmere agreed to pay him £200,000 to go to City, thereby earning the club a fee. Brannan has played most of his games in midfield or up front, scoring 6 goals in 39 appearances in his last season for "The Rovers".
The arrival of Joe Royle as manager of City marked the beginning of the end for Brannan, who was never part of Royle's plans. He didn't make any appearances for City in the 1998/99 season and was sold to Scottish club Motherwell for £378,000 in late October 1998.
