Lee joined the record books after Frank Clark signed him for £3-millions, from Portsmouth in 1997. This is the highest ever signing done by City, and easy money for Portsmouth who bought him for £500 a couple of seasons earlier. Lee was Pompeys leading goalscorer in the 1997/98 season, helping them to the quarter finals in the FA-Cup, and being linked with numerous Premiership clubs. In the end City was prepared to break the bank to get him and in July 1997 he signed for the blues.

The opening season was shattered by injuries, and it took a long time before the striker found back to his form, and started banging in goals. A total of 7 goals in 27 games was not enough to prevent City from slipping into division 2, and so far Lee has to prove that the big money signing was not a big mistake by the City manager and board. We all remember Steve Daley - say no more.

November 4th 1998: Lee was signed by Crystal Palace. The striker had spent the last week on loan with the club before a £1,5m deal was agreed between the clubs.

October 14th 1999: Portsmouth signs Lee for £368,000.
