Barnes joined Preston North End in November 1924 was one of the most consistent goal-getters Manchester City ever possessed. A native of Wadsley Bridge, he made his name with Derby County, who were in want of funds when they transferred him to the City in May of 1914. Though never capped, Barnes has scored over 100 goals in League games since the War, and his dash skillful dribbling and deadly shooting made him a cheap bargain for the City at a transfer fee of £2,500.
